It’s important for your clinic to have data on animal deaths at your clinic.

This report tool provides a straightforward way to access data on animal deaths at your clinic. By identifying patterns in causes of death using standardized reasons, clinics can better understand the root causes of increased mortality rates. This insight supports informed decisions to update protocols and policies aimed at preventing future deaths.

Scope of Reported Deaths: This report only includes deaths that occurred as a result of unsuccessful surgeries. It does not include animals marked as deceased via the Search Client/Animal section. For a death to be included in this report, it must have occurred within 72 hours of surgery and be recorded within an appointment record.

At the top of the report, you can use filters to view data from a specific time period. Dropdown menus also allow you to sort and organize the data according to your preferences. Below are the options:

The report shows the date of death, some animal information, the type, cause of death, necropsy result, vet information, and client information.

How deaths are recorded for reporting.

  • If an animal dies within 72 hours of surgery, this should be inserted into the patient record as the death may be attributable to surgery. This can be recorded from either from the Surgery treatment sheet of Patient Flow or in the checkout screen. You must choose the ‘Type of Death” as pre, intra, or post-operative and “Cause of Death,”
  • This is also where “Euthanized per owner request” is input.

Deaths unrelated to spay/neuter surgery

Outside of a complication related to spay/neuter, there are no reports that count animals marked as deceased. If a client notifies you that their pet has passed away, follow the steps HERE for how to mark the animal as deceased.
