Buying computers for your clinic is like getting a new puppy—exciting at first, but you quickly realize the need for solid budgeting!
We’re aware this is a significant expense for clinics, and hope we can guide you with some tried-and-true recommendations that don’t break the bank.
Generally, we recommend having one computer at the front desk, 3 tablets for curbside and exams, plus one tablet or computer for every 3-person surgery team (including the veterinarian, vet tech, and a VA). Your clinic’s computer needs will vary depending on the size of your staff – but It’s important for your flow everyone has a way to enter information nearby.
We recommend PCs over Macintosh computers, primarily because not all peripherals are compatible with Macs. Additionally, we prefer the Microsoft ecosystem for its compatibility and ease of use.
We recommend these for the front desk and at drug drawing if you can swing it!
All-In-One Computer
You might consider an “all-in-one” computer, like the HP All-in-one touchscreen. An All in One has the tower built inside the screen — so there’s no old-school PC tower. Here you’ll want to be sure purchase the version that allows a wireless mouse and keyboard, and has touchscreen capabilities. This computer is excellent for tasks at the front desk or drug logging and is in the $1000 range.
Work Laptops
ASUS Expertbooks has a new type of processor that is fast and inexpensive. This laptop is designed to be a workhorse and is great for clinic environment.
If you have wiggle room in your budget, we also love Surface Pro laptops which run around the $2000 range.
Donated Laptops
We are often asked if there are limitations with donated computers.
There are no minimum requirements, except for the ability to load and access the Chrome browser.
